If you’re planning an extension, loft conversion or full renovation in Exeter, one of the biggest decisions isn’t the design — it’s who you trust to build it. A story doing the rounds in the construction press this week makes the case for local, family-run builders better than any advert could. Construction UK Magazine reported on a father and son, Steve and Harry Beach, both working for the same Midlands housebuilder, and how the firm’s family-owned culture has given the next generation room to learn the trade properly, from someone who already knows it inside out.
That kind of hands-on mentorship is exactly what sets a genuine local building company in Exeter apart from a national outfit juggling dozens of sites at once. When a business is family-owned, as DMS Conversions has been since 2008, skills get passed down rather than diluted. The person who quotes your job is often the same person checking in on it three weeks later.
It also shows up in the day-to-day details homeowners care about most: a tradesperson who answers the phone, a foreman who knows your street, and a team that isn’t rotating through agency staff between projects. For anything from a garage conversion to a full house renovation, that continuity tends to mean fewer surprises and a tidier finish.
The wider industry is waking up to the value of nurturing talent rather than just hiring it in — apprenticeship schemes and structured career paths are becoming a selling point for the bigger housebuilders. For smaller, family-run firms in places like Exeter, that ethos has always been part of the offer, not a new initiative.
If you’re weighing up quotes for an extension, loft conversion or renovation in Exeter or East Devon, it’s worth asking who will actually be on site and how long they’ve worked together as a team. DMS Conversions has been doing exactly that for homeowners across Exeter and Devon since 2008 — you can see recent projects and get in touch at dmsconversions.com/.
